Workshops: Internal Medicine Residency

  • Challenge

Revamp internal medicine residency feedback sessions by changing the mindset from problem stating to problem solving in order to develop creative solutions to key residency challenges

  • Outcome

Resident generated ideas reported back to the program director and chiefs residents to improve night time education, personalize residency, and build triage confidence

Process

The UCLA internal medicine residency regularly holds sessions during retreat with the purpose of collecting resident feedback. In place of round table feedback, I worked with my co-resident Dr. Shirin Poustchi to conduct design thinking workshops.

Defining the Problem

The program director and chief residents compiled particularly sticky areas in the internal medicine residency program need of improvement, and we shaped them into design challenges.

Focused Workshops

With limited workshop time, we chose to focus on mini-inspiration, emphasizing listening while residents shared experiences, and ideation, establishing ground rules for positive, collaborative brainstorming.

We worked to create a protected space for residents to exercise their creativity. This was special because medical residents spend most of their hours doing direct clinical care.

From their shared experiences and ideation, we presented learnings and concepts back to residency leadership.
